Rotarian Stories

Cary Tantlinger

I had the opportunity to travel to Hermosillo for the second time with a group of individuals as part of our Arizona Rotary microcredit program—and once again, the experience was incredibly impactful.

We visited a variety of borrowers and saw firsthand how these small but powerful loans are transforming lives. From spices being packaged out of a family home, to small convenience shops attached to residences, to open-air market vendors selling everything from high-end Nike and Adidas shoes to reclaimed clothing and goods—every business showcased the resilience, creativity, and determination of the entrepreneurs we support.

The ripple effect of microcredit is undeniable. These funds circulate again and again, empowering borrowers to grow their businesses, increase income stability, and elevate the overall quality of life within their communities. Seeing this compounding impact up close reinforces just how meaningful this programs is.

A special thank you to Tere Ruiz, Past President of the Millennium Rotary Club, Abe Feder, Program Chair and the entire CrediSilvia Team for their hospitality, transportation, and meals throughout the trip. Their commitment to service makes all of this possible.
Proud to be part of a Rotary effort that delivers real, lasting change.

Dr. Laura Dohner

While in Hermosillo to see the Arizona Rotary Microcredit Program in action, I was truly inspired by the borrowers. The small loans they receive have a profound impact, allowing them to increase their earning capacity by investing in additional inventory or purchasing equipment needed to conduct their business. We were able to witness this first-hand when visiting businesses to conduct follow-up surveys. One of these owners, for example, sells new and gently-worn clothing from a shop attached to her home. There we saw how a modest loan from the microcredit program had enabled her to purchase several pallets of new merchandise at wholesale cost, which in turn had helped her to increase sales and income.

Equally impressive was our host, Teresa Ruiz, Past President Hermosillo Millennium Rotary Club, Abe Feder Chair of this program, and the staff of CrediSilvia, the program’s local financial partner, who were all incredibly generous and made us feel genuinely welcome throughout the entire experience. Thank you, my friends, for allowing me the opportunity to see for myself what makes this program a success!
